The President of the Republic patronizing the Diákolimpia® (Student Olympics) again
4th September 2014
Mr Gábor Balogh, the president of the Hungarian School Sport Federation (HSSF) appealed to the Hungarian President of the Republic to be the patron of the largest school sport event in Hungary.
President János Áder, similarly to the previous year, accepted to patronize the event during school year 2014/2015.
Diákolimpia® can be joined by every school age student in Hungary; however, in some municipalities it is the only occasion to participate in health enhancing physical activity. During school year 2013/2014, 280,000 students participated in this competition system. This sport event is organized for the 28th time in 2014/2015, with competitions in the field of table tennis, athletics, duathlon, game competitions, handball, basketball, football, volleyball, gymnastics and swimming. This year, we plan to terminate the present school year with “beach ball competitions”, i.e. beach handball, beach football and beach volleyball competitions. We invite every student and their coaches to take part in this new initiative.
Students and teachers who like intellectual challenges besides physical competitions can also participate in the History of Olympics Prize, which will be organized jointly with the Hungarian Olympics Academy. This initiative is open to students coming from both elementary and secondary schools.
School year 2014/2015 will be the first time when students who like swimming and running can compete against each other in duathlon races; furthermore, table tennis competitions will be open not only to elementary school students but also to children attending secondary school. We are also introducing the B33 category basketball championship, waiting for the application of schools having a lower number of students and that otherwise could not join the championship and compete against teams in “full force”.
