In his message to young people, Commissioner Micallef encourages everyone to find their own way to be active. Sport and physical activity do not have to be about competition or being the best – what matters is finding something you enjoy and that makes you want to move.

Whether it is football, dancing, swimming, skating, running, climbing or something completely different, there are many ways to get active. His message is simple: try something new, enjoy moving and do it your way.

Get ready for European School Sport Day 2026

European School Sport Day is a Europe-wide initiative bringing schools, teachers and students together through physical activity. Each year, schools across Europe organise their own ESSD activities and celebrate the joy of movement as part of the European Week of Sport.

This year’s focus, “Step, Pedal, Move! – Active Mobility in Schools”, encourages schools to explore how walking, cycling, scooting and other active ways of travelling can become part of everyday school life.

On 25 September 2026, schools across Europe will once again come together to celebrate physical activity, friendship and the joy of being active.

Join ESSD 2026 and help us get Europe’s schools moving!
