During the school year 2014/2015, the Hungarian School Sport Federation organizes for the 28th time the Student Olympics, involving all elementary and secondary school in Hungary in order to foster a comprehensive school sport talent promotion system and to promote sports and healthy lifestyle education among students.
Everyone has the right to participate at the talent management system and competition system of Student Olympics, who has been registered in a public education institute in Hungary for the school year. As a result, almost 1,2 million children participates at the competition each year.
Students aged 6-20 years attending elementary or secondary school can apply to competitions in 15 sports (table tennis, athletics, duathlon, floor ball, handball, basketball, basketball B33, football, room football, volleyball, gymnastics, swimming, beach handball, beach football, beach volleyball) and the „Playful Sport Competition”, „Sport Competition of Small Schools” (Kováts Tibor Emlékverseny), Dr. Mező Ferenc – Intellectual Olympics: The winners are awarded with the „Sport Olympics Champion” title.
The „Sport Competition of Small Schools” (Kováts Tibor Emlékverseny) definitely has a special significance at the talent management system and competition system of Student Olympics. This talent management program series has been launched by HSSF 14 years ago for small schools, educating no more than 200 children.
HSSF jointly organizes the Dr. Mező Ferenc Intellectual Olympics together with Hungarian Olympics Academy, where children attending elementary or secondary school can compete in answering questions on history of national and international olympics.
The competitions are organized in an ascending system, i.e. the winners of school, division, district level events compete on county level semifinals/finals; the best athletes then take part in the national semifinals/finals.
HSSF contributes to the diversity and to the comprehensive approach of the Student Olympics by cooperating with the sport federations concerned and by signing license agreements with stakeholders. Within the framework of these agreements, HSSF authorizes the different national sport associations and sport federations as well as the sport federation of disabled people to organize talent promoting competitions in 30 different sports under the name of the Student Olympics.
The significance of the Student Olympics as talent management program is clearly evidenced by its upgrade to national competition by the amendment of legal provisions of 2012, and 1st-3rd placement on national finals now entitles the students for additional points at university entrance exam.
